What is Survey/Mapping and Property Management (SMPM)?
Survey/Mapping and Property Management (SMPM) assigns and maintains legal addresses for unincorporated areas of Los Angeles County and some contract cities. SMPM also notifies utility companies, mail services, and emergency responders about new addresses.
Who Assigns the Address?
If your property is in unincorporated LA County, you’ll work with LA County Public Works. If your property is in a city, start with your city’s permitting office.
What are Common Types of Addresses?
Residential Addresses:
- New single-family or multi-family home
- Adding an Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) with its own utility meter and mail service.
Commercial Addresses:
- New developments or when dividing existing spaces into separate units.
Utility (New Electric Meters) Addresses:
- Electric vehicle charging stations.
- Telecommunication sites.
- Outdoor lighting
- Any other use where only a utility connection is needed, without a mailing address.
Building and Safety Offices
We are here to help you get the permits you need for your building projects. LA County Public Works offers building services to:
- 10 District Offices for unincorporated communities.
- 9 City Offices for incorporated cities.
